Abacus joins forces with UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man

The Abacus Trust Group is proud to be a UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man partner and aims to promote our unique Island.

UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man is a prestigious designation awarded in 2016, recognising the Island, including its land and territorial waters, as a place where nature and people coexist in harmony.

It is the world’s only “entire nation” Biosphere Reserve, celebrating the Island’s unique biodiversity, culture, heritage and sustainable economy.

The programme focuses on keeping the Isle of Man a special place to live, work and visit. It helps residents and visitors understand what an extraordinary place it is, and highlights the Island’s commitment to protecting and sustaining it for the future.

UNESCO, the United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, launched its Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) in 1971. The global initiative promotes the integration of conservation, learning and sustainable development. Today, there are 701 biosphere reserves across 124 countries, with the Isle of Man the only entire nation to hold this designation.

Abacus Trust Group, Managing Director, Kevin Loundes said: “Abacus is proud of the Isle of Man’s distinctive identity and our Biosphere partnership status. Team members regularly participate in events and volunteer with Beach Buddies, local churches, youth organisations, and heritage associations all of which are an integral part of Island life.”
